Yes, it is 2010. A new year, a new decade and a new opportunity to start fresh with our schooling.
2010 will see children begin kindergarten, 5 year olds start prep, early teens begin their secondary schooling, teens start VCE and others begin their tertiary education.
We’re all enjoying the bliss of summer holidays, however, soon the rubber will hit the road as we launch into yet another year of education. With the new school year fast approaching here are a few points to keep in mind to make sure 2010 is a successful and smooth year when it comes to you and your schooling...
Sharpen your Tools: Make sure you have all your stationary, books and other resources ready for the new year. Those who are well equipped and organised with the right tools will get the most out of the new school year!
Create a Space: Clear out the clutter and set up a working space at home. A tidy desk in a quiet space will make homework more manageable and enjoyable.
Meet the Master: Whether you are a student or a parent make sure you get to know your teachers. Don’t crowd them too much in the first week, it’s a very hectic time. After a couple of weeks arrange a time to meet with them and discuss your child’s needs. We learn most when families, teachers and schools work together.
Aim High: A new year allows us to start fresh and set goals. Think about what you want to achieve and establish small milestones to get you there. Whether it’s an ENTER score of 90+ or a getting into the school footy team, 2010 is the year to make it happen!
Balance is Key: Make sure to balance work and play. Establish a routine and allow time for exercise, study, recreation, friends and family. Eat well and get lots of sleep, the rest will take of itself.
Hopefully these hints will help you reflect on how to make 2010 the best year yet when it comes to you and your schooling. Education empowers us to be our best, value your time at school and try your best in this new school year! Good luck.

Are your children too busy after school?

School life is busy enough, are you adding to the pressure? Between basketball training, piano lessons, Sally’s slumber party and the weekly visit to nanna’s nursing home there doesn’t seem to be much time to get the homework done! Are your children too busy? Are they enrolled in too many activities out of school hours?
It is fair to say that times have changed. Today, more than ever before, families are under pressure to keep up with the demands of life in the 21st century. Many parents feel the need to engage their children in extra activities in fear that their child’s social and academic abilities may suffer. Not only does this place financial strain on the family budget, but it also put strain on you, the parent!
Here are few things to consider when it comes to your children and extra curricula activities:
It’s your Child’s Choice: Make sure that your child chooses an activity that they want to do. We shouldn’t force our children into activities that they are not genuinely motivated by. Allow your child to trial a few activities before committing to one.
Balance is Key: Try to find a balance in social, academic and physical activities. Categories your child’s activities into each of these sections and see if your child is getting the right balance.
Unstructured Time is Vital: We need time for our children to play alone and to get bored! By providing unstructured time for our children we teach them many valuable lessons and encourage them to be innovative and creative.
Family First: Before enrolling in any type of formal activity first see if you can do more activities as a family. A weekly walk to the park, family games and creative activities like painting can be a heap of fun!
Choose wisely: Don’t just enrol your child into any music school or dance class. Do your homework, seek feedback from other parents and discuss the program in detail with the teachers or instructors before committing.
School provides opportunity: Primary schools and secondary school all provide many opportunities for our children to explore life beyond the standard curriculum. Private schools and public schools provide many incursions and excursions. Do your best to allow your children to experience these special activities through school.
Investing in our children’s extra curricula activities has always been a priority for Australian families. We want the best for our kids because they deserve it. However, don’t make the make the mistake of over committing your child with too many out of school activities. Let them find something they’re passionate about, find the right balance, give them unstructured play, maximise school excursions and activities and always put the whole family first.
